RED BULL CLIFF DIVING

An inspiring and thought-provoking weekend in the Azores. In Free Solo, Alex Honnold discusses the distinction between risk versus consequence. Approaching this project, I spent a lot of time analyzing the psychology behind performance and fear, and how it applies to elite athletes diving from a 90ft platform. How do you conquer fear? How does fear manifest within you? Is fear overridden by confidence? How do you motivate yourself when you’re not in the first place? What is satisfaction as an athlete for you? How would you explain passion versus obsession? How do you handle failure? What do you learn from failure? Much of my fascination with capturing sport is the seemingly anticlimactic moments and rituals that contribute to the performance, courage, and confidence. As an avid sports fan and athlete, I had the notion that I understood the ratio of input to output. Spending time with Lysanne Richard, I learned that as athletes, we are a sum of our parts — the discipline, the patience, the diligence.
